Every March, Valencia sets itself on fire. Deliberately. With enormous papier-mâché sculptures. And the whole city cheers. This is Las Fallas, and it is the greatest festival on Earth.

Las Fallas Valencia: The Complete Guide

By Paul Osito — Pyromania Enthusiast, UNESCO Cultural Heritage Appreciator

I want you to imagine a city of 800,000 people collectively deciding that the best way to celebrate the arrival of spring is to build enormous, satirical papier-mâché sculptures — some reaching 30 metres high — place them on every street corner, and then burn them all down in one night.

That city is Valencia. That festival is Las Fallas. And it is, without question, the greatest festival on the planet.

What Is Las Fallas?

Las Fallas (literally "the fires") is Valencia's annual festival held every March, culminating on the night of March 19th — the feast day of Saint Joseph, patron saint of carpenters. The festival has been celebrated since the 18th century and was declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.

The centrepiece is the falla — a giant sculptural installation built by neighbourhood groups (comisiones falleras) over the course of a year. These aren't just big statues; they're elaborate satirical commentaries on politics, celebrity, and society, crafted by master artisans called artistas falleros.

The Key Events

La Mascletà (Daily, 2pm, Plaza del Ayuntamiento)

Every day from March 1st to 19th, the city square hosts a mascletà — a daytime fireworks display that is less about visual spectacle and more about raw, earth-shaking sound. It lasts about five minutes and will rearrange your internal organs. It is magnificent.

La Ofrenda (March 17–18)

Thousands of falleros in traditional dress parade through the streets carrying flowers to the Virgin Mary. The flowers are arranged into a giant floral mantle on a 14-metre statue. It is surprisingly moving, even for the cynical.

La Nit del Foc (March 18)

The Night of Fire. The biggest fireworks display you will ever see in your life. Find a spot near the river. Arrive early. Bring earplugs (seriously).

La Cremà (March 19, midnight)

The burning. All 700+ fallas across the city are set alight simultaneously at midnight. The air smells of smoke and sawdust and something ancient and primal. The crowd cheers. The fire brigade stands by. It is extraordinary.

Practical Tips

  • Book accommodation months in advance. Valencia during Fallas is one of the most in-demand travel periods in Spain. Our Osito Hub apartments fill up fast — contact us early for the best availability.
  • Bring earplugs. The mascletà and nit del foc are genuinely very loud.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. You will walk 15km a day without noticing.
  • Eat everything. The street food during Fallas is exceptional — buñuelos (fritters) with hot chocolate are the traditional snack.
  • Stay up late. Valencia during Fallas doesn't sleep. Neither should you.
