Madrid is Spain's capital. Valencia is Spain's best city. These two facts are not contradictory. Paul Osito explains why.

Valencia vs Madrid: An Honest Comparison (Valencia Wins, Obviously)

I want to be clear from the outset that I am not an unbiased observer. I run a rental business in Valencia. I have a bear mascot. I have eaten paella on a Valencia beach while watching the sun set over the Mediterranean, and I have eaten a mediocre bocadillo in Madrid while watching a pigeon fight a tourist over a churro. My perspective may be slightly coloured by these experiences.

With that caveat firmly established, let me give you an honest comparison of Valencia and Madrid.

Size and Atmosphere

Madrid is Spain's capital and largest city, with around 3.3 million people in the city proper and 6.7 million in the metropolitan area. It is a proper European capital — grand, busy, slightly overwhelming, and full of people who walk very fast and look like they have somewhere important to be.

Valencia has around 800,000 people in the city and 1.8 million in the metro area. It is the third largest city in Spain, but it does not feel like it. Valencia has the atmosphere of a city that is exactly the right size — large enough to have everything you need, small enough to feel human.

Weather

Madrid has a continental climate: hot summers (often above 35°C), cold winters (below freezing is not uncommon), and a tendency towards extremes. The city is 650 metres above sea level, which makes it significantly colder than the coast in winter.

Valencia has a Mediterranean climate: mild winters (rarely below 10°C), warm summers (28-32°C with sea breezes), and 300+ days of sunshine per year. The sea moderates the temperature in both directions. Valencia is, objectively, one of the best climates in Europe.

Advantage: Valencia, decisively.

Food

Madrid has excellent food. The cocido madrileño (a hearty chickpea stew) is magnificent. The jamón is world-class. The tapas culture is genuine and the restaurant scene is sophisticated.

Valencia invented paella. It also invented horchata. It has fresh seafood from the Mediterranean, the best rice dishes in Spain, and a market (Mercado Central) that is arguably the most beautiful food market in Europe. The menú del día is cheaper and, in my experience, better than in Madrid.

Advantage: Valencia, but Madrid is not embarrassed.

Beaches

Madrid has no beach. It is 350km from the sea. There is a reservoir (Embalse de Santillana) where people swim in summer, which is fine, but it is not the Mediterranean.

Valencia has 11km of urban beach, starting 3km from the city centre. The water is warm from June to October. The sand is clean. There are beach bars (chiringuitos) serving cold beer and fresh seafood. You can swim in the sea after visiting the Mercado Central, which is a sentence that cannot be written about Madrid.

Advantage: Valencia, by an enormous margin.

Culture and Museums

Madrid has the Prado, the Reina Sofía, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza — three of the greatest art museums in the world, within walking distance of each other. This is Madrid's strongest card and it is a very strong card indeed.

Valencia has the City of Arts and Sciences (the most spectacular modern architecture in Spain), the IVAM (a world-class contemporary art museum), the Museo de Bellas Artes (free, and excellent), and the Bioparc (the best zoo in Europe). Valencia's cultural offer is genuinely impressive, even if it cannot match the Prado.

Advantage: Madrid for museums, Valencia for architecture and overall cultural experience.

Cost

Madrid is significantly more expensive than Valencia. Accommodation, restaurants, and transport all cost more in the capital. A menú del día in Madrid typically costs €13-16; in Valencia, €9-13. A glass of wine in Madrid: €3-5. In Valencia: €1.50-3.

Advantage: Valencia, significantly.

Nightlife

Madrid is famous for its nightlife — clubs that don't open until 2am, bars that serve until 6am, and a general attitude towards sleep that suggests it is optional. If you want to dance until sunrise, Madrid is your city.

Valencia's nightlife is excellent but more civilised. The Ruzafa neighbourhood has superb bars and restaurants. The beach area has clubs in summer. The city knows how to have a good time without requiring you to sleep until noon the next day.

Advantage: Madrid for hardcore nightlife, Valencia for people who also want to see things the next day.

The Verdict

Madrid is a great city. If you want world-class museums, a proper capital city experience, and the ability to stay out until 6am, Madrid is excellent.

Valencia is a better city for most people. It has better weather, better beaches, better food value, better architecture, a more human scale, and a quality of life that Madrid cannot match. It is not the capital, and it does not care.

If you have two weeks in Spain, spend four days in Madrid and ten days in Valencia. You will thank me.
